Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
