Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
